2019 G-Class Unveiled at the North American International Auto Show In Detroit

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class US Release Date and Upgrades

When you think of the characteristics of Mercedes-Benz models, you probably think of words like luxury, sophistication and quality. All models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup certainly contain these qualities, but if you were asked to name the model that is most iconic to the Mercedes-Benz brand, there’s a good chance you wouldn’t first think of the upscale S-Class sedan or thrilling SLC Roadster. Instead, many drivers will first think of the G-Class, the model of choice for anyone who wants to carve out their own path and start a new adventure.

The G-Class is not for everybody, but for those who need a rugged and sophisticated model like the G-Class, there is truly no better option. This is still true even now that the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has debuted at the Detroit Auto Show, with upgrades set to arrive for its US release date late in 2018.

New Suspension On the 2019 G-Class

computer graphic or 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class chassis, brakes and suspension in a warehouseSince the G-Class is all about taking the road less traveled, let’s start by taking a look at one major upgrade that we’re sure you’ll love. It’s a new suspension that was engineered to be independent with a double-wishbone front axle combined with a rigid rear axle. The axles have been raised to maximize ground clearance at 10.6 inches for the front axle gear.

Moreover, this new suspension has allowed the G-Class to make some significant improvements compared to the previous generation of the model. For example, slope climbing ability has improved by 100%, the ground clearance between axles has been boosted to 9.5 inches, and the maximum fording depth has been boosted by 3.9 inches and is now set at an impressive 27.6 inches.

On top of all that, with DYNAMIC SELECT® you now have up to 5 driving modes to make sure you can conquer any terrain you encounter. These modes include Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual, but there is now a G-Mode that is used independently of the other four. This mode is activated whenever one of the differential locks have been tripped or when the LOW Range off-road reduction gear is engaged. Once turned on, adjustments are made to the damping of the chassis, steering wheel and accelerator to avoid unneeded gear changes and provide a better off-road experience.

What Else Is New On the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

All of those new suspension characteristics are carried along by a 4.0-liter V8 engine that can pump out up to 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque between 2,000 rpm and 4,750 rpm. This is paired with a new 9G-TRONIC® automatic transmission.

But, the upgrades for the G-Class aren’t all in regards to performance. Elsewhere, the new model has standard features like LED headlamps and advanced driver assistance systems, like Parking Assist. Inside, the vehicle features leather seats and is optional with the Exclusive Interior Plus package that enhances those seats with diamond stitching.
