When it was first introduced back in 2006, what is today the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS was called the GL-Class. For its first generation, which ran until 2012, and then a few years into its second generation as well, until 2015 to be precise, the full-size luxury SUV went by the GL nomenclature. Then for the 2016 model year, when it received a mid-generation facelift, the name was updated to GLS. It’s been that way ever since, including into its third generation which just kicked off last year. The different models that are available in the full-size luxury SUV include the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 SUV, GLS 580 SUV, AMG® GLS 63 SUV and Maybach GLS 600 SUV. The GLS 450 is powered by a 3.0L inline-6 turbocharged engine capable of generating up to 362 horsepower alongside 369 pound-feet of torque and accelerating from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds. The GLS 580 improves performance by upgrading to a 4.0L V8 biturbo engine that can deliver 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. of torque while accelerating from 0-60 mph in 5.2 s.

The AMG® GLS 63 SUV kicks things up another notch by improving the performance of that 4.0L V8 biturbo. It can generate 603 hp and 627 lb-ft. of torque and accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.1 s. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 SUV focuses more on luxury and premium amenities, but it still provides impressive performance. Its 4.0L V8 biturbo can generate 550 hp and 538 lb-ft. of torque and its acceleration is 4.8 s.
